Space Graveyard

Point Nemo in the South Pacific is the most remote ocean location, about 2,688 km from the nearest land.

It is used as a spacecraft disposal area because retired spacecraft can be deliberately de-orbited to re-enter the atmosphere over this remote region.

Most of the spacecraft burns up during re-entry, while some heat-resistant fragments may survive and fall into this region.
